1. January 21st , 2008:
On
January 21st 2008, we took part in a inspiring talk by Sir Ken Robinson,
called “The War for Talent” at the London Business Forum, England.
The event was full of
great ideas with profound implications for how we see organisations.
The old organisational
chart illustrated the organisation as a series of links like a wiring diagram.
This reflected really quite mechanistic thinking. Simply put, we are not
like mechanisms and this thinking must change if your organisation is to
change.
Some of the world’s
best organisations have already had this shift in thinking. We are more
like organisms, what is important is how the energy flows around the system
– we are more organic. The job of leadership is to encourage the conditions
for growth, as does a healthy organism. A healthy plant grows everywhere
simultaneously.
One aspect of humanity
we must develop is how to release our latent creativity. Spreading the release
of dormant creativity is the role of leadership. The great challenge is
not that we aim too high and fail, but that we aim too low and succeed.
So how does this new
thinking refer to the war for talent? We need to see the talent pool as
the whole organisation and the development of it. The growth of the organisation
is a direct reflection of the growth of everyone within it. Some key principles:
Both of these help us to question
our way of being.
